Berghütte Untervaz

The term "Maiensäss" derives from the month of May, when traditionally the livestock was first brought up to the alpine pastures (Alpaufzug), and it means "May residence." This historical connection between humans and animals is a central element of the project. The client aimed to transform this history and its meaning into the present while creating a harmonious blend of traditional architecture and modern needs.

The building’s layout was designed to maintain a continuous connection between the living space and the stable. A large glass front divides the floor plan into two distinct areas: the living space and the adjoining stable. This creates a direct visual link that reflects the close relationship between humans and animals, while also providing a functional and aesthetic separation.

The architecture combines historical elements and materials with a contemporary design language to reinterpret the Maiensäss as a living part of today's cultural landscape and make it an experience for future generations.
